Firesticks Pavilion is the first stage on a steep and complex site in Tinderbox Tasmania.
The project was prefabricated north of Hobart and aims to strike a balance between view and solar gain especially in winter where the sun disappears early behind the forested hills to the north.
The form reflects the surrounding Blue Gums, which often grow at angles. The materiality is inspired by nearby coastal bunkers; now the protection is from the land in the form of bushfires.

The fitout and extension of the Bicentennial Building on Norfolk Island was a collaboration with Ralph Williams Structural Engineer.
This project presented many challenges, biggest of which was the limitation of materials on the island. In order to get around this, the design is derived from what could be found on the island (especially steel). Unsurprisingly Norfolk Island Pine is a feature!
